Royal Professor Ungku A. His relentless work on rural poverty and his study of the deleterious effects of fragmentation of estates established his reputation as a scholar. He strongly believes that development programmes must be sincere so that poverty can be eliminated as described in his pantun: 

Kelapa puan di dalam jalur,
Kelapa jantan di buat titian;
Usaha pembangunan hendaklah jujur,
Supaya kemiskinan dapat dihapuskan.
