Positioning mLearning in Formal Language offers an alternative viewpoint on how new technology-based approach such as mobile learning (mLearning)should be incorporated and structured into mainstream
educationin augmenting conventional formal learning to aid language learners to achieve their learning goalspracticallyusing mobile technologies. The main highlight of the book builds up on the case on why and how incorporation of any technology tools, devices or approaches in education need to be defined as ‘background’ to appropriate learners’ focus and learning output as ‘foreground’ in the learning process beyond taking pleasure in the novelty of new technology adoption. Complimentary to this argument, the authors demonstrate how technology capabilities should be optimized in aiding language learning especially where and when it is impossible through conventional formal classroom learning. The book is presented in two parts: Part 1: Defining mLearning in formal learning context and Part 2: mLearning for formal language learning. Part 1 introduces mLearning specifically on how it could be defined, theorized, and conceptualized in formal learning context. In part 2, the role of mLearning in formal learning and how it could be conceptualizedand implemented are further elaborated. Although, this book focusses on language learning, the view proposed by the authors in the incorporation of mLearning in formal learning could be applied as an instructional guide for other course subjects in the light of technology incorporation in formal learning.
